Can you accept payments on WhatsApp in the UK?

Short answer: not inside WhatsApp. Here’s how UK tradies get paid from a WhatsApp invoice instead — and get paid faster.

In shortNot inside WhatsApp itself: WhatsApp says paying businesses in the app is available in India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia only. In the UK you send the invoice on WhatsApp and take payment by bank transfer — with clearly labelled bank details on the invoice — or by a card payment link from a provider such as Stripe.

It’s one of the first things people ask once they start invoicing on WhatsApp: can the customer just pay in the chat? In the UK, the honest answer is no — but that doesn’t slow you down if the invoice is set up properly.

Why WhatsApp payments don’t work in the UK

WhatsApp’s help centre says you can pay registered businesses on WhatsApp in India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia, and that it isn’t available elsewhere — with no timeline for other countries (checked 13/10/2026). Meta’s developer payments feature for businesses is India-only. So there is no “Pay” button for a UK customer inside a WhatsApp chat, whatever app or bot you use.

Option 1: bank transfer, done properly

Most UK customers pay trade invoices by bank transfer, and it costs neither of you anything. The thing that slows it down is confusion: a sort code that looks like a phone number, an account name that doesn’t match, no reference. Print the details labelled, every time:

Option 2: a card payment link

A card link on the invoice — from a provider such as Stripe — opens a secure page where the customer pays by card or phone wallet. It removes the “I’ll do it when I’m at the computer” delay, which is where a lot of invoices go to wait. Expect a card processing fee on each payment; bank transfer is still there for customers who prefer it.

On GraftG’s Pro plan, you connect Stripe once in Settings and every invoice carries a pay-online link alongside your bank details. The money settles to your own bank account, the invoice is marked paid automatically when they pay online, and a 0.8% GraftG platform fee applies only to invoices paid through the link.

Option 3: take a deposit up front

On anything substantial, invoice a deposit before you start — it covers materials and shows the customer is serious. On GraftG Pro, reply ACCEPT 42 DEPOSIT 50 to a quote for a 50% deposit invoice, and ACCEPT 42 again when the job is finished to invoice the balance. More in how much deposit to ask for.

What each option costs

Bank transfer is free for you and your customer, and Faster Payments between UK banks usually arrive within minutes. Card links carry a processing fee on each payment, set by the card provider — check their pricing page before you choose one, and decide whether you’ll absorb it or build it into your prices (adding a separate surcharge for paying by card isn’t allowed for consumer customers in the UK). Cash still works, but give a receipt and record it against the invoice the same day.

Whichever you offer, put every option on the invoice itself. A customer who has to message back to ask “how do I pay you?” is a customer who pays next week.

Don’t take payment details in the chat

Never ask a customer to type their card number into WhatsApp, and never accept a card number that way — use a proper payment page. And warn customers that you won’t change your bank details by message: invoice-redirection scams rely on a convincing “we’ve changed banks” text. If your details ever do change, tell customers by phone.

Make paying on the day the default

Set the terms when you quote, send the invoice before you leave the drive, and say plainly it’s payable today. The habits are in getting paid the day you finish, and the full invoicing workflow is in our guide to invoicing on WhatsApp.

FAQ

Can you accept payments on WhatsApp?

Not in the UK. WhatsApp says paying businesses inside WhatsApp is available in India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia only. UK businesses take payment by bank transfer using the details on the invoice, or by a card payment link added to the invoice.

Is WhatsApp Pay available in the UK?

No. As of 13/10/2026 WhatsApp’s help centre lists only India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia for paying businesses in WhatsApp, with no timeline for other countries.

How can a customer pay my WhatsApp invoice by card?

Add a card payment link from a provider such as Stripe to the invoice. The customer taps it, pays on a secure page, and the money goes to your bank account. GraftG Pro adds one to every invoice once you connect Stripe.

Can I charge a fee for paying by card?

Not to consumer customers — UK rules ban surcharges for paying by card to consumers. Build card costs into your prices instead, or offer bank transfer, which is free.

Is it safe to put my bank details on a WhatsApp invoice?

Yes — your sort code and account number are needed for people to pay you and are on every normal invoice. What to avoid is taking card numbers in the chat, and changing bank details by message, which is how invoice scams work.
